Celebrating Willi Ninja (2023)

In early 2023 I was contacted by the Google Doodle team to put together a collection of illustrations and keyframe animations to honor the dynamic, culture-defining dance style of Willi Ninja. The illustrated assets were then composited onto a video of contemporary dancers honoring the aforementioned icon. 

Today’s video Doodle celebrates Willi Ninja, an iconic dancer and choreographer known as the “Godfather of Voguing.” An acclaimed performer, Willi paved a path for Black LGBTQ+ representation and acceptance in the 1980s and ’90s. The community he created, “The Iconic House of Ninja,” lives on to this day. The Doodle video was illustrated by Rob Gilliam. - Google

Today’s Doodle, illustrated by Los Angeles-based guest artist Rob Gilliam, celebrates LGBTQ+ rights activist, performer, and self-identified drag queen Marsha P. Johnson, who is widely credited as one of the pioneers of the LGBTQ+ rights movement in the United States. On this day in 2019, Marsha was posthumously honored as a grand marshal of the New York City Pride March. - Google
